Selections of scratchboard portraits from Bill Russell’s 2019 Inktober series
Bill Russell’s portrait of poet and social activist Lawrence Ferlinghetti on the occasion of his 100th birthday.
This Jazz Portraits Folio of six jazz musician portraits by illustrator Bill Russell were created digitally on an Apple iPad Pro using the Procreate drawing app. Depicted in these prints are Brazilian instrumentalist Hermento Pascoal, cellist Zoe Keating, jazz pianist and composer Jason Moran, eclectic bandleader Sun Ra, jazz vocalist Gregory Porter and upright and electric bass player Esperanza Spalding. They were printed with archival pigment-based inks on Epson Velvet Fine Art acid-free paper and packaged in a limited edition of 12 at the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, California. Learn more here. Bill also created animations found here.
We hope everyone had a safe and happy long weekend. Here’s a new piece of commissioned art by Maurice Vellekoop.
This year, Maurice’s Christmas cards are striking reinterpretations of Renaissance portraits.
