Strip Joint Reportage

Back in 1979, Bill Russell was commissioned by the Toronto Globe and Mail to create a series of drawings at the Loveboat Disco on King Street West. The art director wanted him to do clandestine drawings of the male strippers performing there. He was only used doing courtroom drawings of long boring trials. He drew in the dark while the music played and the women were hollering. Here’s one:

It’s been 20 years since Bill Russell illustrated Stephen King’s bestseller Needful Things. Here is one chapter opening image and the sketch he created.  It depicts a seemingly innocent domestic scene in the fictional Castle Rock. The original is for sale at illogator.

Canadian Bill Russell Embedded in American Civil War

Bill Russell frequently draws and interviews people he finds interesting. Bill’s reportage begins with a pen, a sketchbook and plenty of conversation.

Recently Bill was embedded as a Civil War reporter artist at the Las Mariposas Civil War Days in Mariposa, California. Check out his activities with the California Civil War reenactors.

Bill Russell Blogs Cabs
